Microsoft Word 6.0
USING THE FILTER
The filter lets you select various options for importing Word 6.0 files. To select the options, choose the File > Place command, then hold down the Shift key and double-click on a Word 6.0 file. The "Microsoft Word 6.0 import filter" dialog box appears. Select the options you want, and then click "OK."
All options selected in the dialog box remain in effect until you change them or quit PageMaker.
IMPORTING TABLE OF CONTENTS ENTRIES FROM OUTLINE
When "Import TOC entries from outline" is checked, PageMaker constructs a table of contents based on the outline in the imported Word 6.0 file. This option is selected by default.
IMPORTING INDEX ENTRY FIELDS
When "Import index entry fields" is selected, PageMaker constructs an index from index entries in the imported Word 6.0 file. This option is selected by default.
IMPORTING CONDENSED OR EXPANDED SPACING
Ñ When "Set Width" is selected, PageMaker applies the Set Width attribute to any appropriate text in the imported Word 6.0 file that has the character-spacing attribute set to a non-default value. For more information about the Set Width attribute, see the Adobe PageMaker 6.0 User Manual.
Ñ When "Kerning" is selected, PageMaker applies the Kerning attribute to any appropriate text in the imported Word 6.0 file that has the character-spacing attribute set to a non-default value. This option is selected by default. For more information about kerning, see the Adobe PageMaker 6.0 User Manual.
Ñ When "Tracking" is selected, PageMaker applies the Tracking attribute to any appropriate text in the imported Word 6.0 file that has the character-spacing attribute set to a non-default value. For more information about tracking, see the Adobe PageMaker 6.0 User Manual.
IMPORTING A BREAK BEFORE PARAGRAPH
Ñ When "Import page break before paragraph" and "As page break before" are selected, PageMaker inserts a page break before paragraphs that have the "Page break before" attribute set in the Word 6.0 file. This option is selected by default.
Ñ When "Import page break before paragraph" and "As column break before" are selected, PageMaker inserts a column break before paragraphs that have the "Page break before" attribute set in the Word 6.0 file.

NOTES
In addition to features not imported, please note the following differences in formatting and styles after importing a Word 6.0 file:
Ñ Because Word and PageMaker assign line weights to double border lines differently, thick border lines in Word documents appear as thin border lines with wider spacing in PageMaker.
Ñ Character styles are not imported as styles, but any attributes in a character style in Word 6.0 text are applied to the imported text in PageMaker.
Ñ Paragraph attributes are applied to all imported table cells for a particular table. Because PageMaker does not treat individual table cells as paragraphs, paragraph attributes are not applied to individual imported cells.
Ñ Table of Contents entries generated by the ╥Insert Field...╙ command are not imported. However, Table of Contents entries generated by applying one of the Table of Contents styles are imported.
Ñ Footnotes beginning with numbers other than 1 default to the number 1 when imported into PageMaker.
Ñ Cross references containing page numbers are imported, but the page numbers in the cross references will be incorrect if repagination in PageMaker causes the cross-referenced text to appear on a different page in the PageMaker publication from that of the Word 6.0 publication.
Ñ Text inside frames is imported as paragraphs with borders above and below, but the frame positions are not preserved.
==================

Ñ Hard tabs set in WordPerfect are replaced by default tab settings for the line in which they occur.
Ñ The filter imports only a single leader tab character per paragraph. If multiple leader tabs are used in the same paragraph, the leader character of the last leader tab in the paragraph replaces all other leader tab characters in the paragraph.
Ñ The filter will not properly import tab values greater than 22.75", nor will indent values greater than 22.75" have the intended value. Any tab settings beyond the 40th tab on the ruler will be ignored.
NOTES ON FONTS AND STYLES
Ñ Font names in WordPerfect, which include the font family name plus type styles such as italic and bold, are imported as regular fonts in PageMaker, and the type style is then applied to the regular font. Because PageMaker does not recognize "Regular" as a type style, when the WordPerfect font type style is "Regular," the PageMaker PANOSE font substitution dialog box appears and requests a font substitution. You can eliminate the need for this substitution using PageMaker's File > Preferences command, as follows:
1. In the "Preferences' dialog box, choose "Map fonts...."
2. In the "Font Matching" dialog box, choose "Exceptions...."
3. In the "PANOSE Font Matching Exceptions" dialog box, choose "Add..."
4. In the "Add Matching Exceptions" dialog box, type the "Missing font" name as Fontname Regular (for example, Arial Regular) then select or type the "Substituted font" without the word "Regular" (for example, Arial).
Ñ Nesting of character styles within paragraph styles can cause some paragraph style codes to be ignored if the nested character styles contain text, tabs, or indents.
Ñ Only the paired styles at the beginnings of paragraphs are imported and added to the PageMaker style palette. The properties given to characters by open styles or paired styles inside paragraphs are imported, but the styles themselves are not.
Ñ Formatting created by character styles within paragraphs is imported, but character styles themselves are not imported.
NOTES ON FORMATTING
Ñ Borders are only minimally supported by the filter. If a paragraph is boxed or has any portion of a box applied, PageMaker applies a top and bottom rule. Rules are always hairline, 100% black, with the same line length as the text, with no indents.
Ñ A story's right edge is based on the right margin of the first paragraph of the imported document. A story's left edge adheres to the 1" left margin, the standard WordPerfect default setting.
Ñ Hanging indents are imported if they are created with WordPerfect's hanging indent option.
Ñ Some WordPerfect graphics characters that are similar to, but not identical with, ANSI characters are replaced with those ANSI characters when imported into PageMaker. WordPerfect characters that are not similar to any ANSI characters are imported as spaces.
Ñ Double underlines are imported as single underlines. Outlined, shadowed, and red text is imported as normal text.
Ñ Both footnotes and end notes are imported at the end of imported text. Footnotes and end notes are not differentiated. They both appear in the same list, in the order the reference codes appear in the text. Both import with number reference labels, even if letter references were specified in WordPerfect.
Ñ Table of Contents codes import only if they appear at the start of a paragraph. WordPerfect supports five Table of Contents levels. PageMaker supports only one level and imports all five WordPerfect levels as PageMaker level one.
Ñ Parallel columns are imported as linear text, in separate paragraphs.
Ñ Letter spacing in WordPerfect set to any percentage other than 100% may not import at the correct percentage.
COLORS
Ñ Color names are not saved within the WordPerfect 6 file, and therefore cannot be imported. Unique substitute names will be provided by the filter, and will take the form:
R<red value> G<green value> B<blue value>
An example would be: "R241 G45 B10", which is RGB color 241,45,10. You can change an RGB name to a descriptive name (such as "olive green") by using the Element > Define Colors command.
TABLES, INDEXES, AND LANGUAGE
Ñ Tables with cells that are joined or split will be imported with cells not properly aligned. Cell-level alignment and other cell-level formatting will not be imported.
Ñ Text that wraps in a WordPerfect table cell does not wrap when imported into PageMaker, where it appears on one line in the imported table cell.
Ñ Text marked manually for indexing in WordPerfect imports to PageMaker with index markers. However, text indexed with a concordance file is not imported into PageMaker with index markers.
Ñ Only one language per paragraph is imported.
Ñ English-Australia imports as Australian English instead of UK English.
=====================
WORDPERFECT 3.0/3.1
This filter lets you import files from WordPerfect 3.0 and 3.1 for Macintosh into a PageMaker 6.0 (Macintosh) publication.
IMPORTANT NOTES ON KNOWN PROBLEMS
The following sections describe some known problems with the WordPerfect 3.0/3.1 filter:
Ñ Paragraph rules below
For a paragraph rule applied below the paragraph in WordPerfect, an extra line is inserted below the paragraph after importing the WordPerfect file to PageMaker.
Graphics
Ñ All graphics contained in WordPerfect file import to PageMaker as inline PICTs. After importing the WordPerfect file, you can change the inline PICTs to standalone PICTs.
Ñ Imported WordPerfect files that contain graphics do not print to Tektronix color printers.
To work around this problem, you can replace the graphics after importing the file:
1. After importing the WordPerfect 3 file, delete the inline
graphics.
2. Replace each graphic in its original format (PICT, EPS, TIFF,
etc.) as an inline graphic, using PageMaker's ╥Place...╙ command.
3. Now print the publication to the Tektronix color laser printer.
Ñ WordPerfect Equations are imported, but the WordPerfect equation fonts must be installed on the system for the equations to display and print correctly.
Ñ WordPerfect Graphic Editor objects display in color on the screen, but print in grayscale.
Ñ PICTs display in color on the screen, but print in grayscale.
Ñ Color EPS graphics print in color, but only at low resolution. The bitmap screen representation is printed rather than the full PostScript graphic.
Font Substitution
Files with missing fonts are imported into PageMaker with WordPerfect's default font applied to the missing fonts. PANOSE font substitution does not appear.
PageMaker Scripting Language
Using PageMaker's scripting language to import WordPerfect 3 files results in a loss of formatting attributes. Always import WordPerfect 3 files manually.
Nested Indents
Because there is no direct equivalent of nested indents in PageMaker, the filter attempts to approximate WordPerfect formatting. A paragraph containing nested indents may be broken into smaller paragraphs, and unwanted tabs may also be inserted. After importing, either manually format paragraphs containing nested indents, or do not use nested indents for text that will be imported into PageMaker.
Parallel and Extended Columns
Because there is no direct equivalent of either parallel or extended columns in PageMaker, the filter imports each paragraph sequentially, from left to right.

===================
ClarisWorks 1.0/3.0
The filter allows PageMaker to handle ClarisWorks files with minimal rework after placing the file, but note the following information:
Ñ The filter does not support the ClarisWorks View Scale, Multiple view, and Orientation features.
Ñ Graphics in a ClarisWorks file are imported as inline PICTS.
Ñ Since ClarisWorks applies extra leading to outline, shadow, superscript, and subscript formats, the filter applies manual leading to the imported paragraphs, and resets the autoleading percentage to 100% for those paragraphs. If you want to override the manual leading by applying autoleading to the imported paragraphs, you must first use the Type > Paragraph command in PageMaker to set the autoleading default to the percentage you want.
Ñ ClarisWorks identifies a font by its Macintosh font number, not by the name of the font. As a result, when you place a ClarisWorks file into PageMaker, the PANOSE dialog box displays font numbers (rather than font names) for those fonts that are in the file but are not currently available on the system.
Ñ Text imported into ClarisWorks from SimpleText is displayed in ClarisWorks as 12-point type but is stored with a point size of 0. PageMaker recognizes only the stored point size, and imports text with a point size of 4 or less as 4-point text. To import such text into PageMaker, either assign the desired point size in ClarisWorks, or change the point size after importing into PageMaker.
Ñ ╥Condense╙ and ╥Extend╙ attributes assigned in ClarisWorks are ignored when imported into PageMaker.
Ñ If text is exported from ClarisWorks via automatic scripting, tab and leader formatting does not import to PageMaker.
========================
Microsoft Excel 4.0/5.0
The Excel spreadsheet import filter imports Excel version 4.0 and 5.0 files, but note the following information:
Ñ Text blocks in PageMaker can be no wider than 21 inches, so keep this in mind when importing wide spreadsheet data.
Ñ The Excel filter crashes if the file being placed is already open in Excel on another computer, and it is the first time the filter is launched during the PageMaker session.
Ñ Outline and shadow type styles do not import.
Ñ Vertical alignment does not import.
Ñ Empty cells import to PageMaker with different type size and font formatting (instead of Excel's default type size/leading/font) if preceded by cells with different type attributes.
Ñ The filter attempts to substitute "Helv" for Helvetica, "System" for Chicago, and "Tms" Rmn for Times.
Ñ Importing Excel 4.0 files with "Apply default spreadsheet style" selected will apply PageMaker's default font and font size, rather than the font and font size applied in the Excel 4.0 file.
====================
Cross-Platform Issues
When moving graphics cross-platform, the best format is usually EPS, TIFF, or WMF/PICT, in that order.
